Oliva’s Els Rajolars project was given five awards by the jury of Spain’s Productive Cities II Europan 15 Contest

The Councillor for Citizen Participation, Josep Escrivà, together with the mayor of Oliva, Yolanda Balaguer, attended the participatory workshop organized by the department on the subject of the Master Plan for the Urban Development of Els Rajolars de Oliva. It served to bring together a series of opinions and proposals about the project from the citizens who attended.

The objective of the Master Plan is to decide the strategy for the urban development of the area of Els Rajolars de Oliva in response to the local council’s municipal citizen initiative for the transformation of this space. This project consists in the improvement and regeneration of the southern edge of the urban centre to improve its connections. The space measures 177,398 m². The plan involves using innovations in urbanisation, respecting the identity of the place and its environment, to establish a productive area within the city that is suitably connected.

The proposal has taken into account principles such as economic and environmental sustainability, respect for architectural and engineering heritage, diversification of compatible uses, mobility based on non-motorised journeys, proper governance of the system adopted, innovation in high-performance vocational training and citizen participation.

“Els Rajolars represents an important opportunity for urban expansion in Oliva. The development will enable us to incorporate the leisure and cultural spaces, care centres and large green areas requested by citizens. On the other hand, it also seeks to attract business and population to this area with new residential buildings or the incorporation of a professional training centre specialised in local productive activities. Mayor Yolanda Balaguer said.

The face-to-face participatory workshop is part of the process of carrying out the Els Rajolars Urban Development Master Plan, the goal of which was to collect opinions and proposals from those who live in the municipality. Based on a previous analysis of the area and its environment, the project drafting team presented a proposal with concrete actions in this context. These are the proposals that were considered, validated and expanded in the participatory workshop with citizens on 17 November last year. “The name of the workshop, ‘Designing Els Rajolars,’ represented an invitation to all citizens to attend this face-to-face event but also to participate in the online survey that is currently active.” Said the councillor for citizen participation Josep Escrivà, who together with the mayor, declared himself to have been very grateful for the interest and collaboration already shown by Oliva’s residents and the various foundations present.
